DIDEROT & D'ALEMBERT
Art Du Cheval L'encyclopedia Diderot & D'alembert: Recueil de Plances, Sur Les Ciences, Les Arts Liberaux, Et Les Arts Mechaniques, Avec Leur Explication
France: MAME Imprimeurs A Tours, 2002. First Edition Thus. Softcover. ISBN: 2914239815. Pages are clean and tight; this is a NEW book. Pages not numbered. Illustrated with 100+ b/w drawings and diagrams. This is a reproduction of a section of the famous dictionary, the first, printed in Paris, by Denis Diderot and Jean D'Alembert. Although written during the 'Age of Reason' the authorities were NOT interested in seeing this massive, innovative, and exhaustive work published, which took over 25 years to finally see publication and distribution. Catherine the Great, Empress of Russia, was so impressed that she invited Diderot to visit her, which he did. This section covers most of aspects of horses and their care. In 18th century France, as in most parts of the western world, horses were the main source of transportation and power, so their care and equipment was of the utmost importance. This book covers horseback riding [haute ecole], saddlery, construction of riding schools/buildings/menage, and stables, farriery [horse shoeing], harness and carriages, tools for making equipment, and bits and stirrups [really kind of scarey seeing the bits they would use, poor horses]. The text is all in French. Fascinating glimpse back to the France, and her use of horses, pre-Revolution. While many things have changed, much has stayed the same; horses are still horses. Oversized. ; L'Encyclopedia Diderot & D'Alembert Series; B&W Illustrations; 9 x 12 1/2; 112 pages. New .

BURGER, UDO AND OTTO ZIETZSCHMANN
The Rider Forms the Horse: Function and Development of the Muscles of the Riding Horse
Warrendorf, Germany: FN Verlag Deutsche Reiterliche Vereinigung E. V, 2003. First English Edition. Soft Cover. ISBN: 3885424886. TRUE FIRST ENGLISH LANGUAGE EDITION. NEW book; still in the publisher's shrinkwrap. Soft cover, maroon ground with grey lettering; grey spine with maroon lettering. Back flap folds out to show figure 4, in color. Pages are clean and tight. Multiple copies available. Illustrated with 24 b/w photographs and drawings from the 1939 edition; additionally there are 23 color photographs added to the 2003 edition. "The photographs have been retained in their authentic form in order to maintain the integrity of the original book because the prints relate technically very closely to the text and should only serve to better illustrate the training of the horse to the rider". Translated by Teresa Hoffmann. "In this book, first published in 1939, the authors....set out clearly and precisely the requirements for the successful training and long and healthy life of the riding horse. The authors explain the physiological facts which are the foundation of the teaching of riding and discuss important factors in the training of the horse and how to recognize and rectify training problems. Olympic champion and former German and US national trainer, Klaus Balkenhol and Dr. Gerd Heuschmann...as well as other prominent figures in the equestrian world, set out why this book is just as important to today's riders and horsemen as when it was written. According to Klaus Balkenhol, average horses can be made into top horses through correct training and an understanding of the links between muscular function and the construction of the skeleton working in combination during the different phases of trining. From the point of view of the veterinary practitioner, correct and well-thought-through riding remains the best way to prevent all injuries to the horse. Dr. Gerd Heuschmann considers this book to be compulsory reading for all competition and amateur riders of every equestrian discipline who feel responsible for their horses, and for trainers, judges and veterinary practitioners". This edition has a foreword by Klaus Balkenol; thoughts on the book by Dr. Gerd Heuschmann; 1989 foreword by Heinz-Dieter Donner; 12 chapters; two appendices, dealing with position and function of the muscles, and a select bibliography. Scarce book to find in English, and still considered one of the great classics of riding titles from the 20th century. OUT OF PRINT. ; B&W and Color Illustrations; 6 1/2 x 9 1/2; 120 pages. New .
